FAQ
What is KEFiM?
The Center for Liberal Studies - Markos Dragoumis (KEFiM) is the main independent, non-state, non-partisan liberal think tank in Greece. It has the legal form of a civil non-profit company and is headquartered in Athens. We envision Greece as a role model of economic and civil liberty that enables its citizens to pursue their dreams and aspirations. The mission of KEFiM is to increase individual and economic freedoms of Greeks through the promotion of liberal ideas and policy proposals.
What is a think tank?
Think tanks are institutions of civil society that aim to promote ideas, formulate policy proposals, or organize educational programs. A think tank may be associated with political or business actors, or may be independent. KEFiM is an independent think tank.
What is our relationship with political parties?
KEFiM was originally founded as an institute of the political party "Liberal Alliance". Since 2016, has operated under a new statute as an independent, non-partisan think tank. In fact, in case a member of our Board of Directors decides to participate in the national or European elections as a candidate, his/her position at KEFiM is suspended. Our policy proposals (for example our overall reform proposal "Greece 2021: Agenda for Freedom and Prosperity") are addressed to all Greek citizens and aim to influence political programs of all political forces in the country that accept liberal democracy.
Where does our funding come from?
KEFiM does not seek, nor does it accept state funding, while our main principle is not to have any kind of dependence on special, business, or other interests. For financing our actions we rely on the financial assistance of our approximately 150 supporters and the members of our Board of Directors (37% of our total funding during the two years 2017-8), as well as independent, non-governmental, non-partisan liberal private bodies such as the John Templeton Foundation and the Atlas Network, which account for 53% of our resources. 5% of our funding comes from liberal organizations that in turn accept state or European funding (Europe Liberal Forum, Friedrich Naumann Foundation), while the remaining 5% is mainly small corporate sponsorships and book sales. How does KEFiM define liberalism?
For us, liberalism is the system of ideas that promotes individual rights and free market under the rule of law and democracy. KEFiM implements a policy of a "big tent": We host any idea that falls under the above broad definition, considering it our duty to contribute to the development of the liberal movement in Greece that will operate beyond and outside party lines.
Is KEFiM neoliberal?
KEFiM is liberal. Please read the above answer!
Who do we represent and who represent us?
The actions and initiatives of KEFiM express and represent exclusively our Board of Directors and our executive team, and are addressed to every Greek man and woman. Learn more about our initiatives here.
